The Importance of Communication:
Communication is a key factor in everyday life and finding ways in which we can connect as a society has never been more important than it is now. The way we share ideas and process information varies between each individual and understanding that the same applies to the neurodiverse community is essential to building a mindful and inclusive world.
In order to tailor communication styles to the neurodivergent, we must educate ourselves in the modes of communication that are most effective for many of those that are a part of the neurodiverse community. Commonly, neurodiverse individuals, especially those with autism, process information differently and can “require more time to consider a conversational topic or to plan a response in a way they hope to communicate” (Sickels, Autism Spectrum News). Taking this into account, an effective mode of communication would be to outline ideas before filling in details. That way, information presents itself as less intimidating and provides neurodiverse individuals with more time to process and respond to conversations. Information can also be written down so that the neurodivergent can follow along or refer back to key points. Patience is an important trait to maintain when addressing a neurodiverse individual and in order to get ideas across, one should always be mindful and clear while refraining from reacting defensively.
In cases where verbal communication may be difficult for a neurodiverse individual, sign language can serve as another mode of communication because for some individuals, “fine motor skills are significantly better than oral motor skills..” because “hand movements feel much less minute and subtle” (ASL for Autistics). The exaggerated communication form may be easier to understand and the facial expressions that are coupled with them allow for the sharing of desired tones without the possible misinterpretation for frustration and anger that may come through in one’s voice. As one of the most widely used languages in the United States, sign language can be utilized to improve the sharing of ideas within the neurodivergent community and can “promote understanding and acceptance of the language among others” (Lead with Languages).
Accommodating the needs of the neurodiverse community, especially the way we communicate, can promote a more kind hearted society that allows the voices of all individuals to be heard and understood.
